Mobile related terms & secreates!!

Hello frendz.....

First of all let me clear the technical terms (which I think will be very useful) & their implications in a nutshell:

GPRS: "general packet radio service"-used to transfer data through radio waves from a server to your phone (client)-speed of data transfer is determined by the CLASS of gprs your phone has(the higher the better)& also network strength in your area.

Eg.6600 having a class 6 gprs gives lower speed than 6630/3230/7610 etc, having Class 9/10 gprs for the same signal strength.

At peak Airtel may give 10-15 kBps download speed

Hutch may give 7-10kBps...while

BSNL may give 3-5 kBps... (No OFFICIAL).

EDGE/EGPRS: "enhanced data for GSM evolution"-technically same as gprs..But gives approx. 3 times faster data speed than ordinary gprs.6630/3230/7610/6670/6680/6681/5500.. etc. are all EDGE capable phones. However, the service provider(Airtel,Hutch etc.)needs to install separate EDGE towers for such facilities. Available in very few metros in India.

eg.an EDGE capable class 10 phone may give 10kBps ordinarily & 25 kBps near EDGE towers.

3G:"3rd generation" mobile phones-this technology is yet to come to India. Provides tremendously fast data transfer...may be about400-500 kBps normally...According to resources BSNL might be the first to roll out 3G in India. About mid 2007.Absolutely essential for mobile TV (watch out for N93).6630/6233etc. are 3G phones.

HTML:"Hyper text markup language"-a type of encoding of text, pics etc used in web pages. these page open in all web browers like Internet Explorer,Opera,Firefox etc(for PC) & Opera,Netfont(for mobiles)

XHTML:this is another type of encoding used in WAP pages...mainly used by the default web browser in most of s60 phones.

usually contains less graphics. Hence smaller in size than html pages...& loads much faster.

WAP:"wireless access protocol"is an application environment like the WEB...for mobile users having GPRS capable phones

eg.WEB site for Yahoo! in India is..http://www.yahoo.co.in...its about 100kB in size

WAP site for Yahoo! in India is..http://in.wap.yahoo.com...its about 15kB in size

Wi-Fi/WLAN:"wireless local area network"...uses a kind of radio technology (IEEE 802.11b)..to give near-broadband speeds.

However, you need to be within the range of a wi-fi hotspot to get any data.wi-fi hotspots are like a central server location providing data to peripheral clients.

e.g. make the picture more clear...imagine a computer having all the data & people trying get some data out of it via Bluetooth. They only get data as long as thy are within. Say 50m of the computer. Otherwise not.

Same is the case of wi-fe...just imagine the computer as HOTSPOT..& instead of Bluetooth there is wi-fi....only difference is that you may be charged for the amount of data in case of wi-fi, unlike in Bluetooth.
